Spanish

At St John’s we believe that learning another language enables children to broaden their understanding of the world and provides a gateway to other cultures. We aim to instil a love of language learning in all our children and equip them with the knowledge and skills they need to continue their languages journey when they transition to secondary school.

A subject specialist co-ordinates the teaching of the foreign language, setting out the long term plan. Years 3 to 6 receive a 60 minute lesson each week taught by the specialist teacher and supported by the class teacher. From reception to year 2, some classroom instructions are spoken in Spanish so the children are exposed to the language at an early stage.

Our languages curriculum provides children with the opportunity to

  • Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
  • Speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
  • Write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
  • discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied
